South Albany High School will have a new mascot

Posted on: April 25, 2018

This week, the School Board heard a recommendation from Acting Superintendent Tonja Everest to change the mascot at South Albany High School.

A possible mascot change has been under consideration since last August and has included student input and a series of community forums to discuss the mascot and share opinions. The change will address concerns about racially charged associations that contribute to a negative image and perception of South Albany High School.

Principal Brent Belveal read comments to the School Board in support of the change. He said the students will lead the process to identify a new mascot, which should be complete before the school year ends this year.
