Transfers are required for students to attend a school other than their “neighborhood school” – the school assigned based on the parent/guardian’s legal address of residence. An online application must be completed to request a transfer to another school.

In-District Transfers:
The In-District transfer process applies to Greater Albany Public School District students who wish to transfer from their neighborhood school to another school within the district.
- Students need to enroll at their home boundary school even if they are applying for an In-District transfer.
- Parents will be notified via e-mail, phone call, or letter about their application (please allow at least two weeks following the window closing for this process).
- The online application link will become active the day the window opens.
Please complete the following form: Online GAPS In-District Transfer Request Form
- If your transfer request is not approved during this window you may apply again during the next open window; we do not keep a waiting list.
Inter-District Transfers:
- The Inter-District transfer process applies to students who live outside of the Greater Albany Public School District but wish to apply to attend a GAPS school.
- This is a two-part process. Both parts must be completed in order for the application to be complete.
- Part 1: Please complete the online INTER-District Transfer Request form below.
- Part 2: Please contact your resident district for a release form to attend Greater Albany Public Schools. This must be signed by your current school district.
Please complete the following form: Online INTER-District Transfer Request Form
Inter-district Transfers, transferring OUT of the Greater Albany School District
For students who wish to transfer out of GAPS District to another school district, please print the Transfer Out form (ENG) (ESP). Fill out the form then email it to:
Shelly Johnson – Grades K-12
Marcie Barnhart – Virtual Charter Schools (Grades K-12)
Or bring it to the District Office, 718 Seventh Ave. SW, Albany, OR. We will need to sign the form for your new district indicating we release your child as a student in our district.
For further information please call Shelly Johnson, 541-967-4519 K-12 or Marcie Barnhart, 541-967-4525 (for Charter Schools).
If you moved during the school year, here’s what you need to do:
- Contact your current school and let them know you have moved. This is critical!
- IN-District Move: Students who move IN-District during the school year may complete the school year at their current school provided a Special Circumstance IN-District Transfer request form is submitted.
If you wish to continue at your current school the following year, you must apply online for an In-District Transfer during the next open window.
- INTER-District Move: Students who move OUTSIDE-the-District during the school year may continue at their current school provided a Special Circumstance INTER-District Transfer request form is submitted.
If you wish to continue in the GAPS district the following year and beyond you must apply online for an Inter-District transfer during the next open window.
- Already have a transfer? Students who move, but have a current transfer can update their transfer by completing the appropriate Special Circumstance Transfer form.
- If your current transfer is IN-District, you need to complete the Special Circumstance IN-District Transfer form
- If your current transfer is INTER-District, you need to complete the Special Circumstance INTER-District Transfer form
Per School Board Policy JECC-AR(1), School Attendance – Students who Reside IN the District: Any student in attendance at a district school due to bonafide legal residency whose residence changes to a different district attendance area may choose whether to attend the new neighborhood school or the former school.
- Students who move during the school year may remain at the former school upon completion of an in-district transfer application. (per JECC-AR(2), “Parents desiring an exception to their student’s enrollment at the designated neighborhood school will complete an electronic in-district transfer application.” see above for more details)
- Students who move during the summer are permitted to stay upon the submission of an in-district transfer application. (per JECC-AR(2), “Parents desiring an exception to their student’s enrollment at the designated neighborhood school will complete an electronic in-district transfer application.” see above for more details)
Once a student enrolls in the school in the attendance area to which the parents or guardians have moved, it becomes the student’s assigned neighborhood school.
