Lead Tests
Greater Albany Public Schools tested all drinking and food preparation water fixtures for lead in all schools this summer. Due to high demand, results from the labs are taking longer than expected. Test results for all schools will be published here when they are available.
Any fixtures that show elevated lead levels will be disconnected, repaired and retested. Faucets with elevated lead levels will not be reconnected until the water has been tested and proven safe for drinking.

Any fixture with tests showing elevated lead levels will be kept out of service until tests show that they no longer exceed allowable lead levels.
EPA Recommendations
The Environmental Protection Agency recommends disconnecting any water fixture with lead levels of 20 parts per billion (ppb) or higher.
Testing protocol:
GAPS followed the EPA recommended protocol for water testing:
The EPA recommends that schools collect 250 mL first-draw samples (i.e., samples of stagnant water before any flushing or use occurs) from water fountains and other outlets used for consumption, and that the water fountains and/or outlets be taken out of service if the lead level exceeded 20 ppb. The sample was designed to pinpoint specific fountains and outlets that require remediation (e.g. water cooler replacement). The school sampling protocol maximizes the likelihood that the highest concentrations of lead are found because the first 250 mL are analyzed for lead after overnight stagnation.

Well Water Tests
Some of our rural schools have their own wells, which are tested regularly as required by the Environmental Protection Agency.
