At the conclusion of the Regular Board Meeting of the Directors of Greater Albany Public Schools on Monday night, Director Pat Eastman announced his immediate resignation.
“This is going to end a seven year run I have of volunteerism in the school district, which has been extremely fulfilling and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” Eastman said during the meeting. “I regret to have to submit my resignation, but the fact of the matter is I have a recurring health condition that is not fatal but is chronic. With the direction of my personal physician and consultation with my wife, Elaine, I tender my resignation immediately. I want to thank you all very much for your friendship, and your kindness, and your openness, and all of the hard work that all of you do.”
Eastman served on the GAPS School Board for a little over a year, having been appointed to fill an empty seat on August 19, 2019. The term on the At-Large No. 2 position that he had filled is one of three board positions that are set to expire on June 30, 2021.
“It’s been a pleasure working with you and I know you have been instrumental in a lot of work for the district over the years,” Board Chair Kim Butzner said to Eastman. “We are sad to see you go but wish for nothing more than the best of health. We will miss having you and thank you very much for your service on behalf of GAPS.”
A retired business manager, Eastman has lived and worked in Albany since 1973. He served on the GAPS Bond Oversight Committee prior to becoming a board member and was instrumental in the passing and implementation of the construction bond that has built two new schools and financed extensive additions and improvements at all GAPS schools.
“Pat, I just so appreciate the steady way you approach things and yet with great passion,” Superintendent Melissa Goff said. “It is clear that you have a great deal of passion for the success of our community and great passion for the success of our children within this community and for them to stay here and raise their families here and continue that cycle for GAPS and Albany. I know that stepping away from the board will not be stepping away from the individuals here who will need to pick up the phone and seek your counsel and I appreciate you being that kind of a person. You have been a great mentor to me in the short amount of time that we’ve been able to work together.”
In addition to Butzner and Goff, the three other GAPS Board Members also offered their appreciation and well wishes to Eastman following his announcement.
