Sachi Wrigley’s education journey has been far from ordinary. Following sixth grade, she moved from Roseburg to Albany and joined Greater Albany Public Schools. Her high school experience has been marked by Zoom classes and virtual learning. In spite of physical distancing, Wrigley has made an intentional effort to connect with her peers and community. Due to her hard work and dedication in and out of the classroom, she will graduate as one of West Albany’s ten valedictorians. Following graduation, Wrigley plans to attend the University of Oregon and study education. She aspires to be an elementary school teacher.

Wrigley’s robust resume of clubs and community service highlights her desire to help make West Albany a better place. During Wrigley’s freshman and sophomore year of high school, she co-founded the Feminist Club, explaining, “Feminist issues are something I had been passionate about since middle school. One day, I was discussing current event issues with a friend and teacher and the teacher suggested we organize a club, so we did.” Through her club involvement she has been able to organize fundraisers and help draw attention to important issues. Wrigley has also participated in the Gender Sexuality Alliance Club, the Asian American and Pacific Islander Club, band, and choir.

“My favorite part of West Albany has been the amount of things you can do. It can sometimes be difficult to decide what to do, and sometimes your schedule can be packed because there are so many opportunities,” Wrigley explained. She commended West Albany for its robust course catalog and ability to find something for everyone, stating “There’s so many opportunities just with the elective courses that are offered.”

While many programs have been formative for Wrigley, one has especially stood out. She joined the band her freshman year, after participating in the Memorial Middle School band program. In May, she was awarded first place for her string bass solo performance at the 2022 state solo competition.

Wrigley credits West Albany and the faculty, especially Stuart Welsh, for her academic and personal growth over the last four years. “I’ve had him all four years. He gives off the vibe that he cares a lot. He wants us to perform well inside and outside of band,” she stated. She speaks highly of the band teacher, explaining she has never felt bad after leaving his class. She is grateful for the constant support she has been able to receive from Welsh, and other teachers, over these last four years.

West Albany High School is proud to help Wrigley, along with its 296 other graduating students reach their full potential. As she proudly explained, West Albany is rich in opportunity for involvement both inside and outside of the classroom. “At West, there is something for everyone,” Wrigley said.
