The Greater Albany Public Schools Board of Directors have determined the process to fill the vacated At-Large No. 2 position.
The four current Board members will work to fill the vacancy after former Board member Pat Eastman announced his immediate resignation on October 26. The length of service of this position will be brief, as it is one of three current board position terms that will expire this summer. The term of appointment will run through June 30, 2021.
Board Policy BBE states that vacancies are to be filled through Board appointment. Upon declaration of a vacancy on the Board, the remaining members shall meet and appoint a person to fill the vacancy from any of the qualified electors residing in the zone or district as provided by law following a 20-day advertising period. For this At-Large position, applicants residing in any zone of the district will be eligible.
To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Have lived in the district at least 12 months prior to appointment,
- Not be an officer or employee of the district,
- Be a registered voter in the GAPS boundary, and
- Be at least 18 years of age.
The Board will select an appointee based on the following qualities:
- The candidate should have personal integrity, intelligence, and appreciate the values of good education.
- The candidate should be willing and capable of assuming the required responsibilities and have a good understanding of their role as a Board member.
- The candidate should have the ability to work with others and be a champion of all our district schools.
- The candidate should be prepared and willing to devote significant time to the study of the problems of education in the district, as well as the state and nation at large, so as to be able to interpret them to the electorate.
- The candidate must be willing and able to make sacrifices of their time and expertise for the benefit of the district.
Board members should expect to attend three to four regular Board meetings, work sessions, retreats, and/or other board obligations, per month.
