Dairy Princess teaches Tangent students about cows

Posted on: January 10, 2017

Faith Wilson, the Linn and Benton Counties Dairy Princess Ambassador visited kindergarten, second- and fourth-grade classrooms at Tangent Elementary School. The visit was arranged by kindergarten teacher Sadie Tempel, a former Dairy Princess.

Ms. Wilson told the children about different breeds of milk cows, how much milk cows produce (an average of 7 gallons per-day), what they eat and how much they eat (100 pounds per-day). She told them that cows drink the equivalent of a bathtub of water each day. She also described how cows are milked and the steps that are necessary in getting the milk to market.

The princess impressed students with her crown and left them with some practical tips for healthy eating habits.

School Board hears survey results for bond projects

Posted on: January 9, 2017

The School Board is continuing to review community input and facility needs for a bond proposal for the May 16 election. At the Board meeting on Jan. 9, they heard results of the December voter survey that was conducted by The Nelson Report, a survey firm.

The results showed that voters understand the need to make facility updates and improvements and indicated support for a bond that would:

  • Make major renovations and upgrades districtwide, such as replacing heating and ventilation systems and roofs, improve safety and security and add or improve vocational education classrooms at middle and high schools.
  • Add classrooms to reduce overcrowding and accommodate projected growth, including new classrooms at Oak Grove Elementary School and a new elementary school near Timber Ridge.
  • Begin the first phase of a rebuild of West Albany High School, which is aging and doesn’t meet current instructional needs. This rebuild could include adding a commons, vocational classrooms and an auditorium.

The Board will meet again on Thursday in a work session at 6 p.m.

See more information in the Survey Executive Summary and the survey presentation.
