Calapooia Life Skills students share Olympic Spirit

On Friday, the Calapooia Middle School Life Skills class carried and passed the Olympic Torch through the Calapooia hallways. Students from all classes lined up along the lockers to watch, cheer, and celebrate the beginning of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Calapooia’s Basecamp classes have all chosen a country participating in the games to closely follow over the next couple of weeks. Base Camp is part of the school’s CLIMB initiative to engage students and motivate them to overcome obstacles and reach goals. The program started in 2016.

Free engineering workshop for elementary and middle school students

Early exposure to hands-on engineering activities can build interest in science, technology, engineering and math fields.

The Pipeline to Jobs project and Linn Benton Community College are sponsoring a hands-on workshop at Heritage Mall on Feb. 24 for elementary and middle school students. The event is free and open to all interested students.

Join us for a day of hands-on activities that give kids the opportunity to learn about how things are built, and engage in fun, creative kid-friendly engineering projects. Kids will enjoy building, learning, and creating something new at each station with our fun and experienced mentors. All supplies provided.

SAHS mascot forums scheduled for this month. Sign up to attend

A review of the South Albany High School Rebels mascot is underway, and a possible change to a more inclusive symbol will be discussed.

Principal Brent Belveal has announced a process that will start later this month to collect input. He sent this email to the South Albany High community announcing the plan:

The school district has hired a consultant to collect input from the community about the mascot at South Albany and we wanted to let you know how you might get involved if you are interested.

These three opportunities are limited to the first 75 people to sign up for each session online using the link:  ttps://goo.gl/forms/gIyoIon2rEusmoyq1

You will need to be signed up as one of the 75 for one of these nights to be admitted.  This will assure that all voices have a chance to be heard during each session.  The information will be collected and provided as data for the district to consider in this discussion.

A quorum of School Board Members may be present.

Attention Parents: You are invited to a TAG forum

GAPS parents are invited to join parents of talented and gifted students in Corvallis for an informational night about the social-emotional needs of TAG students.

The featured speaker is Paula Prober, author, counselor and educator with more than 30 years experience.

The event will take place in the Linus Pauling Middle School Auditorium in Corvallis on Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. Childcare is available.

“Many staff members and families are eager for more support around TAG students and issues,” said Stacey Torres, District Talented and Gifted Facilitator. “I hope they can attend this event to​​ improve our ability to support our TAG learners.”

Transfer Window Open

2018-19 Transfer Application Window Open Until February 28th.

Parents,

If you are interested in applying for a 2018-19 Transfer to another school, the online application link is now open and will close February 28th at 4:00 p.m.

To apply for a transfer you need to complete the online application which is located on our district website.

  • From the GAPS home page, click on the Parent Box to the right.
  • Click on the Information button.
  • Click on Transfer Requests near the bottom of the list.
  • Click on the 2018-19 Transfer Application box.
  • Click on the link to our online application.

There are several reasons a transfer request may be denied.  Those include overcrowding at the requested school, or if a student is failing to maintain minimum standards of attendance, behavior, or academics at their current school.  For more information about Student Assignment to schools please refer to School Board Policies JECA, JECB, and JECC.

On-line application for the 2018-19 school year is currently open until February 28th.  If you have any questions about the transfer process, you may contact the district office at (541) 967-4519 and ask to speak with Jennifer Hart.
