IN 2012/13, before South Albany High School implemented its programs to better their graduation rates and post-secondary preparedness, they had a 58% Latinx graduation rate with a 76% graduation rate overall.
When Nate Munoz was hired as principal to South Albany, one of the ideas he brought with him was a way to improve graduation scores. With the help of Rose Zoellner, he created RedHawks Rising, an after school student study and support group, with a goal of creating relationships between at-risk students and SAHS staff.

Building Relationships Keeps Kids EngagedRedHawks Rising is held for three sessions throughout the year and is completely voluntary. The first part of the program is independent study and snacks, where teachers work closely with students on their homework and core subjects.
“It gives the teachers a different environment to reach students,” says Zoellner. “This helps them build relationships and keeps kids engaged.”
The second part of the program is free dinner participation in enrichment activities, such as knitting, painting, crafts, and culinary sessions.
Besides
fostering connections between students and a mentor-teacher, the staff at SAHS also try to connect the community with the students. They have a seminar called ‘Rise’ which is composed of student leaders who promote diversity and volunteer for activities such as ocean cleanup and trail grooming.
“These volunteer activities help the students build skills and their resumes,” says Zoellner, “while connecting them to the community.”
There is also focus on post secondary preparedness with college tours and ACT prep courses, and they expose the students to CTE business partners around Albany.

ks Rising has around two hundred and forty students per semester, and while everyone is welcome, they focus on at-risk youth. “This program is for kids who haven’t found their ‘why’ yet,” says Zoellner, meaning they haven’t found the reason for why they should go to school and apply themselves.
Bringing families into the schools and sending students into the community builds another important aspect of South Albany life, which is family culture. Or as Zoellner says, “Prioritizing service to our students and families.”
South was recently awarded certification as a national AVID demonstration high school, the only high
school in Oregon to receive this honor. AVID promotes graduation readiness and post-secondary excellence in at risk youth through elective credit classes.
With the implementation of AVID, RedHawks Rising, and other programs, South now has a 92% Latinx graduation rate with a 89% graduation rate overall (2017/18).
Not only have they improved their scores but they’ve closed the achievement gap! Congratulations RedHawks. May you continue to soar. ◊

Cuando el Sr. Nate Muñoz llegó a South Albany High School, una de las ideas que trajo consigo fue cómo podrían mejorar esos rangos de graduación. Con la ayuda de Rose Zoellner, creó RedHawks Rising, un grupo de estudio y apoyo para estudiantes después de la escuela, con el objetivo de crear relaciones entre los estudiantes de riesgo y el personal.
RedHawks Rising se lleva a cabo durante tres sesiones durante todo el año y es completamente voluntario. La primera parte del programa es estudio independiente y bocadillos, donde los maestros pueden trabajar estrechamente con los estudiantes para ayudarlos con la tarea y las materias principales.

La segunda parte del programa es una cena gratuita, y participan en actividades de enriquecimiento, tales como tejido de punto, pintura, manualidades y sesiones culinarias.
Además de fomentar las conexiones entre los estudiantes y un maestro mentor, el personal de South también intenta conectar a la comunidad con los estudiantes. Tienen un seminario llamado ‘Rise’, que está compuesto por líderes estudiantiles que promueven la diversidad y se ofrecen como voluntarios para actividades como la limpieza del océano y la preparación de senderos.
“Estas actividades de voluntariado ayudan a los estudiantes a desarrollar habilidades y plan de estudios”, dice Zoellner. “Los conecta con la comunidad”.
También se enfoca en la preparación posterior a la preparatoria al organizar recorridos universitarios y cursos de preparación para el ACT, y exponer a los estudiantes a los socios comerciales de CTE en Albany.
RedHawks Rising tiene aproximadamente doscientos cuarenta estudiantes por semestre, y aunque todos son bienvenidos, se enfocan en jóvenes en riesgo. “Este programa es para niños que no han encontrado su” por qué “todavía”, dice Zoellner, lo que significa que no han encontrado la razón por la que deben ir y aplicarse en la escuela.
Traer familias a las escuelas y enviar estudiantes a la comunidad construye otro aspecto importante de la cultura de South Albany, que es la cultura familiar. O como dice Zoellner, “Priorizar el servicio a nuestros estudiantes y familias”.
South recibió recientemente la certificación como escuela preparatoria de demostración AVID nacional, la única escuela preparatoria en Oregon que recibió este honor. AVID promueve la preparación para la graduación y la excelencia post preparatoria con jóvenes en riesgo a través de clases optativas de crédito.
Después de implementar AVID, RedHawks Rising y otros programas, South tiene un índice de graduación de Latinos del 92% con un índice general de graduación del 89% (2017/18).
