Treyton Truax, a fifth grader at Liberty Elementary, was presented with the President’s Award at the Corvallis-Albany (Linn-Benton Counties) Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) 2021 Freedom Fund Celebration on November 6. The President’s Award is given to those who show a deep sense of courage and leadership to build a positive social change in the community. NAACP presents one President’s Award per local branch.
“Treyton has done a vast amount of work on himself this past year. He has chosen to take events that could have easily led him to anger, rage, self doubt and bitterness, into growth, self confidence and strength to stand up for himself and for justice,” Treyton’s mother, Bridget Truax said. “My son is a boy who is growing into a young man, being an honorable change-maker in our society.”
Jason J. Dorsette, the current NAACP President for the Corvallis/Albany (Linn-Benton Counties) Branch, had the opportunity to get to know Treyton as a mentor. “About a year and a half ago, Treyton had an awful experience while playing in his front yard,” Jason said. “A group of people drove by yelling slurs at Treyton, and I wanted to support him through this.”
Jason grew up in a household of activists for social justice and civil rights. His passion for equity has stemmed into his career and community involvement, and he continues to be a leader for many in the area.
“Jason has been consistently there for Treyton, whether it’s showing up on our doorstep in support, playing games at the park, delivering gifts at Christmas, conversations on the phone, and feeling included in the NAACP family. Jason sees and values Treyton for who he is, and includes him in his life,” Bridget said.
Treyton’s involvement with the community and NAACP led him to the President’s Award achievement as a 10 year old. His activism at a young age is something that Jason, and many others, have witnessed.
“Treyton is an inquisitive and athletic kid who does his research on the things he is invested in whether it’s sports, athletes, history, gaming, current events, or civil rights leaders in our country,” Bridget said. “With the support of NAACP and SA JBO (South Albany Junior Baseball Organization) baseball, he has learned to hit adversity head-on with confidence, to live and play with passion and the determination to be undefeated in life, to control what he can control, and help make change in what is needed.”
“He has so much courage. I like to call him the Junior President – he loves it,” Jason said.
The Annual Freedom Fund Celebration is an evening to recognize the Corvallis/Albany NAACP Branch accomplishments and raise funds supporting the ongoing work of positive social change in our community. The Corvallis/Albany NAACP Branch currently has more than 600 active members and several committees created for multiple avenues of social justice and equity within the community.
“The support from the NAACP has given him strength in a community of people who have lived through the same struggles he has and will continue to go through, and has given value and power to his voice in speaking up for himself and others,” Bridget said. “Whether it’s injustice he sees on the playground, to a friend, a teammate or a person who he doesn’t even know, Treyton speaks up for what he believes.”
