High school girls learn about manufacturing careers at annual LBCC event

Posted on: January 21, 2018

Girls from South and West Albany high schools joined girls from schools around the region at the annual LBCC Women, Metals and Manufacturing event, sponsored by the Albany Chamber Pipeline to Jobs project.

More than 65 students participated in the hands-on event that had a waiting list of students who were interested in learning about skills in high-demand program areas.

Students each attended two of the following program areas: Computer-Assisted Design and Drafting (CADD), Welding and Fabrication, Machine Tool Technology, and Mechatronics.

Each session included a chance to try the equipment, and learn about program requirements and median salaries. Students who are currently in the LBCC programs were on hand to guide the girls through the activities.

South Albany High School brought 20 girls, and West Albany High School brought 12. Students signed up voluntarily, and the group included freshmen through seniors.

For some, the event was a chance to learn about options after high school. For others, it was a chance to confirm career aspirations. The group from West included a student who hoped to be chef and one who planned to be a welder.

During lunch, a panel of women with successful careers in manufacturing shared their stories, including how they started and how quickly they advanced in their fields. For many, career experiences grew out of entry-level work and evolved to positions of leadership — often as the only female in their company or department.

Kayla MacFarlane-Herold, who works for Viper Northwest, said this is a great time to pursue work in manufacturing because the demand is high, and employers will provide benefits such as tuition reimbursement. “For the first time, I believed I could have a career, not just a job,” she said.

Message from Superintendent Jim Golden about Oak Grove plans

Posted on: January 19, 2018

Parents and Community Members,

1. The School Board on Monday will be considering plans to forward to the community for feedback on the proposed options to support the Oak Grove Elementary School tear down/reconstruction.

2. If the board approves the options for public consideration, people will have at least three opportunities for feedback. These opportunities will occur via:

  • a public meeting at NAMS on Monday, February 5, at 7 p.m.
  • a survey, open to the public on January 23 to February 11.
  • in the regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, February 26.

We sincerely appreciate your thoughtful feedback on this important matter.

Opening this week: Legally Blonde by South Albany High School theater students. This musical theater production showcases the talents of student performers at SAHS. The following description is from SAHS Theater Director Benjamin Sell:

SAHS Theater Arts takes their show on the road to perform at the fabulous Russell Tripp Performance Center at Linn-Benton Community College!

Join your favorite sorority girl, Elle Woods, as she braves the world of Harvard Law School on a quest to win her boyfriend back — but ends up discovering her true potential along the way. Based on the hit 2001 film, this fabulously fun musical shows us that with a bend and a snap, a little dog, and a lot of believing in yourself, you can achieve anything!

Don’t miss the show so big, the SAHS theater couldn’t contain it! This show contains some PG-13 references that may not be suitable for all family members.

Tickets: $10 general admission, $8 students/seniors. Tickets available in advance online or at the door.

Tangent students welcome Dairy Princess on “Tiara Day”

Posted on: January 17, 2018

Tangent Elementary School students learned about dairy products from Linn and Benton Dairy Princess Stephanie Breazile this week. The princess visited the school at the request of kindergarten teacher Sadie Tempel, who is a former Linn and Benton County Dairy Princess.

Breazile is a student at OSU. Her family has a dairy in Hillsboro. She spoke to the students about proper nutrition, having dairy products in their diet, and how milk is produced and processed.

All students had a chance to meet Princess Stephanie. In honor of the event, Principal Gretchen Rayburn proclaimed it an unofficial Tiara Day at the school.
