Timm to lead Calapooia Middle School beginning 2024-25 school year

Mark Timm was recently named Principal of Calapooia Middle School beginning the 2024-25 school year. Pending board approval, Timm will move from his current position as an Assistant Principal to Principal beginning July 1. 

“Mark has been a dedicated employee to Greater Albany Public Schools, serving in a variety of roles, including as an educational assistant, a teacher, and an administrator,” said GAPS Superintendent Andy Gardner. “His longevity in Greater Albany will be a tremendous asset for our Calapooia students, staff, and families.”

Timm has the unique perspective of having worked in several positions over the last 26 years. He began his career with the school district in 1998 as an educational assistant at Central Elementary School. 

He has served as the Assistant Principal of Calapooia since July 2022, and as the Dean of Students from 2017 to 2022. Timm taught language arts and social studies for the school district from 2007 to 2017. He also worked as a special education teacher in the district for five years. 

“I am honored to step into the role of principal at CMS, the very school I have spent the majority of my career in,” Timm said. “I look forward to continuing our strides in academic growth, building relationships with students and parents, and working alongside an outstanding staff.” 

Timm has a master’s degree in education and bachelors of science in educational studies, both from University of Oregon. He has his administrator’s license from Portland State University.

Timm will take the lead at Calapooia after current Principal Tristan Heisley moves into an Assistant Principal role at West Albany High School next school year.

Greater Albany Public Schools is pleased to announce Bruce C. Schmidt, Jr. will serve as the district’s next Assistant Superintendent. Schmidt will begin his contract with GAPS on July 1 pending board approval on April 8, but plans to spend time over the next few months getting to know district staff and systems.

“I am excited for Bruce to begin as the Assistant Superintendent of Greater Albany Public Schools,” said GAPS Superintendent Andy Gardner. “Bruce has experience as a 14-year accomplished teacher – teaching in both Career and Technical Education and science classrooms. He has served as a district level leader, principal at two levels, and coached student-athletes in football and baseball over the course of his career. He will be an incredible addition to GAPS and I look forward to him joining our leadership team.”

Schmidt is the current Director of K-12 Schools for the Gresham-Barlow School District. As the Director, Schmidt oversees the daily operations of the district, middle and high school principals, as well as supervises the Facilities Department. He began this position in July 2023 and his key accomplishments include the management of several capital improvement projects, most notably the installation of turf baseball and softball fields; the construction of a student-based health center; and remodel of the district’s alternative school. 

Prior to this role, Schmidt was the principal of Sam Barlow High School for nine years. During his tenure at Sam Barlow, Schmidt established a five-year average graduate rate of 86 percent and established partnerships with local community colleges leading to increased college credit attainment for students. In 2014 when he started as principal, Sam Barlow High School offered 1,254 credits and Schmidt led the charge to more than quadruple those opportunities in five years. 

Schmidt is passionate about building collaboration in schools. “I am a forward-thinking visionary leader with unending energy and a passion grounded in the belief that all students and staff can achieve excellence,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt has earned several awards over his career including the Oregon Music Education Association Administrator of the Year in 2019, and the Gresham-Barlow School District Instructional Leader of the Year for the 2020-21 school year. Additionally, for his work in Career and Technical Education (CTE), he was recognized as the 2009 State CTE Administrator of the Year. Schmidt holds a master’s degree from Portland State University, as well as his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis.

South Albany is honored to become the first national AVID demonstration school to receive revalidation in the state of Oregon. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a national program providing students with academic skills, content knowledge, and the social adaptability to be successful after graduation. In 2014, South Albany became the first school in the district to introduce the AVID program. Since 2014, Calapooia Middle School, Memorial Middle School, North Albany Middle School, Timber Ridge School, and West Albany High School have adopted AVID. 

“We are proud of South’s revalidation as a demonstration school,” said Superintendent Andy Gardner. “AVID provides our traditionally underserved students with opportunities to succeed. It lays the groundwork for student achievement by teaching organization, time management, and critical thinking.” 

South Albany has a history of student achievement through AVID. In 2018, SAHS hosted its first AVID showcase. During the event, about 100 educators from around the state visited the school to see how AVID was being implemented across the school and ask questions to students and staff. Following the showcase, in the spring of 2019, South Albany had the privilege of becoming the first nationally recognized AVID demonstration school in Oregon. Demonstration schools undergo a rigorous evaluation process to ensure AVID strategies are implemented accurately and effectively. As a demonstration school, South Albany serves as a model for other districts seeking to implement AVID. Only 2 percent of all AVID schools in the world qualify as demonstration schools.

That legacy of student achievement continues today. On Tuesday, March 5, South Albany was revalidated as a national demonstration school. The news came after the school hosted an AVID showcase, welcoming educators from neighboring school districts. The day included classroom visits, professional development overview, a student panel discussion, and a staff panel discussion. 

“When we started AVID at South we wanted to make sure that it had an impact on the entire student body,” said Angelia Spencer, District AVID Director. “Students at South believe in themselves, they have hope for the future, and they have the skills they need to be ready for their next steps whether it be a four-year college, a CTE program at a community college, a trades program, or the military. They know that they have choices.”

The AVID program has brought tremendous growth to South Albany. Since implementing AVID strategies, the overall graduation rate for the school has jumped more than 10 percent. Prior to introducing AVID, the Latino graduation rate was 57.7 percent; today, the Latino graduation rate is 93 percent. Last year, 94 percent of the AVID seniors were admitted to a four-year university, and 93 percent of the AVID seniors were first generation college students. Last year, AVID seniors raised $2,381,164 in scholarships and grants.

Preparatoria South Albany recibe revalidación como escuela nacional de demostración 

La preparatoria South Albany (SAHS, por sus siglas en inglés) tiene el honor de convertirse en la primera escuela de demostración AVID a nivel nacional, en recibir revalidación en el Estado de Oregon. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID, por sus siglas en ingles)- Avance mediante determinación individual, es un programa nacional que brinda a los estudiantes habilidades académicas, conocimiento del contenido y adaptabilidad social para tener éxito después de graduarse. En el 2014, la preparatoria South Albany se convirtió en la primera escuela del distrito en introducir el programa AVID. Desde el 2014, la escuela secundaria Calapooia, la escuela secundaria Memorial, la escuela secundaria North Albany, la escuela Timber Ridge y la escuela preparatoria West Albany han adoptado AVID.
