Greater Albany Public Schools announces the following administrative changes and assignments for the 2020-21 school year:

Calapooia Middle School

• Assistant Principal George Sanchez has accepted an Assistant Principal position with the Salem-Keizer School District. We thank George for his years of service to the district and wish him well in his new role!  
• Marshall Jackson will be the new assistant principal. Mr. Jackson previously served in the district as principal at North Albany Middle School. Those who worked with Marshall previously know that he has important strengths that will be a great complement to the team at Calapooia. As an experienced administrator, Marshall will be able to hit the ground running and support CMS staff and students from day one.

Central and Takena Elementary

• Principal Lisa Shogren is retiring. She has worked with GAPS since 1988. Shogren worked for the Greater Albany School District for 32 years. She started her career at Liberty Elementary as a kindergarten teacher and continued at Liberty for over 20 years teaching kindergarten, first grade, and acting as their reading specialist. She later worked as a reading specialist at North Albany, Fir Grove, and Clover Ridge Elementary. She then moved into an instructional coaching role at the district office, and once she received her administrative degree, she was hired at Takena and Central Elementary as their principal and continued in that role until her retirement. “I feel blessed to have had such a rewarding career serving our students and families in the GAPS community,” Shogren said. 
• Julia Bradley will be the new principal at Central and Takena.

Liberty Elementary

• Principal Tracy Day is retiring. She has worked with GAPS since 1991. Day is a product of Albany schools, attending Riverside Elementary, Memorial Jr. High and West Albany High School, graduating in 1983. A Beaver believer and OSU grad, she taught first at Fern Ridge Middle School and then Memorial Middle School as a 6th grade teacher. For one year she was a Student Achievement Specialist for the secondary level before becoming the assistant principal at North Albany Middle School. She was able to move to principalship at North Albany Elementary and then moved to Liberty in 2017. “This is my 30th year and I feel VERY fortunate to have worked for one of the best school districts in Oregon,” Day said. “I will miss my school family very much, but plan to volunteer often in the years to come.”
• Bob Daugherty, currently the principal at Sunrise Elementary, will be the new Liberty principal.

Oak Grove Elementary

• Principal Jerrie Matuszak is retiring. She has worked with GAPS since 2008. Jerrie Matuszak worked in the The Greater Albany Public School District for a total of 12 years. For the last six years she has served as an elementary principal at Oak Grove Elementary and previously for six years she was a reading teacher/coach at Sunrise Elementary. She will retire at the end of this school year. “It has been an honor to serve the families of this school district,” Matuszk said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and will miss the students, staff, parents, fellow administrators and community members. I am ready for the next adventure in my life of lazy days, time with grandbabies and traveling with my husband. Thank you everyone!” 
• Anne Griffith, currently the principal at Waverly Elementary, will be the new Oak Grove principal.

Sunrise Elementary

• Bob Daugherty, currently the principal at Sunrise Elementary, will be the new Liberty principal.
• Kimberly Jordan will be the new principal at Sunrise.

Waverly Elementary

• Anne Griffith, currently the principal at Waverly Elementary, will be the new Oak Grove principal.
• Melanie Casprowiak will be the new principal at Waverly.

Secundario Calapooia

Greater Albany Public Schools district leadership and administrators from the three high schools have made the joint decision to postpone all graduation ceremonies to a later date. 

Feedback from students indicated that they would still like to have in-person graduation ceremonies at a later date rather than a different version of the ceremony in the spring or cancelation. At West Albany High School, principal Susie Orsborn reported that 90% of seniors surveyed were in favor of a postponed graduation ceremony.

Ceremonies will be held some time before the beginning of the 2020-21 school year, early enough for students leaving the area for college or other post-graduate endeavors to attend. Dates will be dependent on when state orders will allow for such gatherings.

While official ceremonies are on hold, schools are still working to honor seniors in many ways this spring. That will include virtual recognition on the previously scheduled graduation dates as well as other efforts. 

Seniors from all three high schools are receiving commemorative yard signs to display, and West Albany seniors will also be able to pick up their caps and gowns along with other personal items at their schools this Friday, May 1, from 1-4 pm. South Albany and Albany Options School students will be able to receive caps and gowns at a later date in May. Click here for more information on all high school item retrieval dates. 

South Albany and West Albany High Schools are both joining schools across the state in the Oregon Be the Light Movement, turning the stadium lights on each Friday night at 8:20 p.m. (20:20 military time) for 20 minutes to honor graduates and acknowledge what should have been the most celebratory part of their year.

Los líderes y administradores del distrito de las Escuelas Públicas del Gran Albany, las tres escuelas preparatorias han tomado la decisión conjunta de posponer todas las ceremonias de graduación para una fecha posterior.

Los comentarios de los estudiantes indicaron que aún les gustaría tener ceremonias de graduación en persona, en una fecha posterior en lugar de una versión diferente de la ceremonia en la primavera o la cancelación. Starting on Friday, May 1, Greater Albany Public Schools will be able to reach more children in need as two new bus routes will begin delivering free meals. The routes are being added in addition to the 17 locations currently serving free breakfast and lunch for all children age 1-18.

The two routes will cover a large portion of the Albany community and help reach students that may have been unable to easily reach the meal locations. Each route will have a driver and a second staff member handing out food.  

Where feasible, buses will pull off the road before opening the door to distribute. Where a road stop is the only option, the bus will use it’s red lights to stop traffic as if they were loading students. Families and children are asked to maintain normal social distancing at the designated stops.

Maps of the two routes as well as scheduled stop times and locations are listed below. Buses won’t arrive or leave early, but may arrive late depending on demand or traffic delays at earlier stops.

A partir del viernes 1º de mayo, las Escuelas Públicas de Greater Albany (GAPS) podrán alcanzar a más niños necesitados, ya que dos nuevas rutas de autobuses comenzarán a entregar comidas gratuitas. Las rutas se están agregando en adición a los 17 lugares que actualmente sirven desayuno y almuerzo gratis para todos los niños de 1 a 18 años de edad.

Las dos rutas cubrirán una gran parte de la comunidad de Albany y ayudarán a alcanzar a los estudiantes que no pudieron llegar fácilmente a los lugares de comidas. Cada ruta tendrá un conductor y un segundo miembro del personal repartiendo comida.

Donde sea posible, los autobuses saldrán del camino y se estacionarán antes de abrir la puerta para distribuir las comidas. Cuando la única opción es una parada en el camino, el conductor prendera las luces rojas para detener el tráfico como si estuvieran subiendo los estudiantes. As Greater Albany Public Schools has shifted to Distance Learning during this unprecedented time, the district continues to assess family internet needs.

Many families have been able to acquire reliable internet access through a variety of ways, including affordable home internet service through internetessentials.com (free for first 60 days), access to WiFi in GAPS building parking lots, and connecting to WiFi over open Xfinity networks throughout communities.

However, due to a variety of circumstances, some families are still in need of internet connections to adequately access learning materials. In an effort to ensure all families have internet, the GAPS technology team, led by Technology Director Richard Thomas, has worked hard to acquire personal hotspots to give to families.

Thomas had initially ordered 60 T-Mobile hotspots, but only 10 were scheduled to have a reasonable delivery time due to the very high demand nationwide. Superintendent Melissa Goff reached out to State Legislature Representative Shelly Boshart Davis to see if she could assist, and Ms. Boshart Davis was able to connect Thomas to some communication company leaders and several executives quickly got back to him. Though T-Mobile representatives had already been quite responsive, there was only so much they could do to help in these times. The order of 60 hotspots was pushed through and all 60 devices were delivered within two weeks. 

In the last week, 10 GAPS families were given hotspots and one was delivered to serve the children living at a local mission. The families receiving hotspots are not just out of the area of service but are also true-life families in need. Among the recipients are:

• Three students who’s migrant parents aren’t able to receive internet due to the wrong type of paperwork.
• Students whose parents are essential workers struggling to make ends meet and unable to assist with school work at home.
• A student who has to travel with parents that are truck drivers, who was using their limited phone data plan to do school work while on the road.
• A family with four students trying to all share one weak internet connection.

These are just a few of the wonderful families we are helping get connected and give a little piece of mind during this pandemic. Calls will continue to be made to other families that have expressed need.

Estas son solo algunas de las maravillosas familias, a las que estamos ayudando a conectarse y dar un poco de tranquilidad durante esta pandemia. Se seguirán haciendo llamadas a otras familias que han expresado su necesidad.
