After consultation with the Linn County Health Department and with a commitment to the health of our students, staff, and teachers, Periwinkle Elementary will be closed on Monday, Nov. 25. All other Greater Albany Public Schools will remain open on Monday as all schools are being sanitized today and before school tomorrow. We will continue to monitor the situation and will send updates as needed.

Though your children’s school may be open, all students and staff should remain home for at least 48 hours after the symptoms have ended. Common symptoms from this virus have been vomiting and diarrhea. Other symptoms may include fever (100.4 degrees F or higher), fatigue (very tired), muscle or body aches, headache, chills, sore throat, cough, and a stuffy or runny nose.  

Continue to make sure your kids and family are frequently washing their hands – including between fingers – with soap and warm water, washing for 15 to 20 seconds. Sing the ABCs slowly while scrubbing to ensure a thorough wash. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol based hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth to prevent the spread of germs. 

Again, if your child is affected, be sure to keep them home until they have been fever free or not vomited for at least 48 hours to help prevent the spread.

All Grant Recipients

Each year the Albany Public Schools Foundation (APSF) receives classroom grant applications from teachers throughout the 21 schools in the Greater Albany Public School district. By the deadline of October 15^th of this year, the Foundation had received a total of 105 grant applications equaling over $94,000 in requests.

On October 29^th, the APSF Allocations Committee joined together with other community partners and recommended the funding or partial funding of 84 of these applications for a total of $50,000.  The funded enrichment-based classroom grants, approved by the APSF Board, ranged from electronics to materials for art, reading, music, and physical education.

One of the Foundation’s community partners, Samaritan Diagnostic Imaging Services, jumped at the chance to help Jennifer Bornheimer, a health teacher at West Albany High School, with her request for colored paper. The colored paper helps Mrs. Bornheimer to teach her students about organization. In her 21 years teaching she realizes “that one of the most significant obstacles to a student’s success is the lack of organization.”

Another community partner that stepped up to help was Baldwin General Contracting. The construction company was notified that South Albany High School teacher Matthew West (pictured above) needed funds to help maintain and grow his CTE (Career Technical Education) Manufacturing and Construction classes. They helped fund his request with a match from the Foundation in order to purchase tools and supplies for his programs.

A total of 88 Greater Albany Public School students were recognized as Academic All Stars at an awards ceremony Monday night at South Albany High School.

High-achieving 3^rd-12^th grade students in the fields of English Language and Math earned Academic All Star honors. The awards were presented to the students by Greater Albany Public Schools Superintendent Melissa Goff, Assistant Superintendent Lisa Harlan, the GAPS School Board, and principals from the district’s 18 3^rd-12^th grade schools.

GAPS Bond Home Page

Oak Grove Elementary had its official opening on Aug. 29 ahead of the first day of school on Sept. 9! Over 27 months countless people worked diligently in demolishing the old building and completing the new school with 20 classrooms for 360 students.

The new building has a separate cafeteria and gym, a teacher professional learning center, a media center, outdoor mini amphitheater, and upgrades in technology, including voice-lift amplifiers and interactive televisions with touchscreens. The new school also features color-change lighting in the special programs classrooms.

The other new elementary school under construction, Meadow Ridge, is on track to be completed in early 2020. Located next to Timber Ridge School, Meadow Ridge will feature 24 classrooms and serve 600 students, helping alleviate overcrowding as the district’s 15th elementary school.

Exterior sliding panels have been recently installed and painted while sheet metal workers installed flashing around roof edges and parapets. New pavement for roads and parking lots are in place as building construction is nearing completion and finishes are being installed throughout the interior.

Students at South Albany High School saw many changes when they returned to class in September, including new Career Technical Education (CTE) classrooms and a new theater space. Construction continues at South Albany on the new auxiliary gymnasium and a new open entry way for the original gym. The new complex is scheduled to go live in January.

West Albany High School is also receiving a new auxiliary gym with concrete tilt panel walls recently put in place. West Albany is also receiving new CTE spaces, a new student commons, and an auditorium which will be available for use by the entire district.

Classroom conversions and upgrades, primarily in CTE spaces, have been completed at all four GAPS middle schools.

In addition to the major projects, bond money has also been used for critical upgrades on existing facilities, including paving, roofing, restroom remodels, HVAC maintenance, and repiping. Planning and construction on upgrades will continue into the 2020-2021 school year.

¡La primaria Oak Grove tuvo su inauguración oficial el 29 de agosto antes del primer día de clases el 9 de septiembre! Durante 27 meses, innumerables personas trabajaron diligentemente para demoler el antiguo edificio y completar la nueva escuela con 20 aulas para 360 estudiantes.

Former Greater Albany Public Schools Superintendent Pat Bedore died unexpectedly on Oct. 22, one week shy of her 71st birthday.

“Greater Albany Public Schools mourns the loss of Pat Bedore and our thoughts are with Pat’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Superintendent Melissa Goff said. “I appreciate all the hard work Pat put in building our school district during her tenure and the professional and positive manner in which she served our community.”

Bedore served as Greater Albany Public Schools Superintendent for eight years, beginning as interim superintendent in 2000 before receiving the full time position in 2001 and remaining in the role through the 2007-08 academic year. While Bedore was superintendent in Albany, she successfully maneuvered the district through the challenging process of getting a $55 Million bond passed in November of 2006. The bond led to numerous upgrades to various buildings and led to the opening of a new school in the fall of 2009.

“Pat always put students first,” said Jim Haggart, who served as Executive Assistant to Bedore during her tenure. “She trusted teachers and their skills and dedicated authority to principals to do what they believed was right for their buildings. After she became superintendent, 2003 and 2004 were some lean budget years and she had to make some tough financial choices. She had very good relationships with teachers, the labor associations, and the community. She led the 2006 school bond campaign, which built Timber Ridge School and made renovations to all of the school buildings and that bond has been paid off completely by the community.”

Long-time school board member Don Bacher recalled Bedore as a dedicated leader that thrived in her eight-year tenure as superintendent.

“It was a major shock when I heard the news,” Bacher said. “Pat was a dedicated educator. She loved kids and she enjoyed her job and was excellent at it. She was very professional and had a good sense of humor. It was always enjoyable working with her.”

Bedore accepted the GAPS superintendent position in 2000 after having served as assistant superintendent since 1997. Prior to that, she was an administrator in the Springfield School District, where she held a variety of positions including working in human resources and serving as building principal at Brattain. She taught in Junction City for 15 years before moving into administrative roles. In total Bedore worked for 37 years as an educator before starting a private consulting firm following her retirement from Greater Albany Public Schools.

“Pat was a people person and worked at finding solutions to issues,” Bacher added. “She worked really hard at moving things forward in a positive way. She worked very well with the community and her door was always open to everybody. She just was a wonderful superintendent for the district.”
