New South Shore preschool program provides opportunities for Spanish speaking kids.
Three weeks ago, Greater Albany Public Schools opened its fourth preschool child development site at South Shore Elementary School. Unlike the district’s existing preschool programs at Sunrise Elementary, Tangent Elementary, and Waverly Elementary, the South Shore program is a Spanish language program, meaning the class is taught entirely in Spanish.
“We are excited to have a Spanish preschool,” said South Shore Principal Marcia Beltran. “It gives the students an opportunity to attend a Spanish program and get the skills they need to be successful in kindergarten.”
South Shore Elementary is a dual language immersion school. About half the students speak English at home while the other half speak Spanish at home. Kids are immersed in one language or the other throughout the day, receiving instruction in both Spanish and English. The school has teachers and staff trained to help students understand and develop their language abilities. Students who participate in the dual-language program become proficient in both languages, develop a more positive outlook on different languages and backgrounds, and are more prepared for the workforce by being bilingual and bi-cultural.
The South Shore preschool class has 17 kids between the ages of three and five. During the day, the children have indoor exploration, outdoor play, rest time, group gathering time, physical education, and music classes. During indoor exploration time, the kids are able to choose between a variety of activities, such as imaginative house and kitchen play, a sensory exploration bin filled with sand and toys, science, or art.
“Research shows how powerful a preschool learning experience can be for children,” said Superintendent Andy Gardner. “A Spanish language preschool program gives children access to learning without the barrier of language.”
The program was funded by Preschool Promise, a grant provided by the state with the goal of creating accessible and high quality preschools to families in Oregon. Funds are organized by Early Learning Hub, a program designed to ensure collaboration between all early learning programs in the state. All GAPS preschool programs are free of cost to families.

Superintendent’s message: Attendance remains key to student success
Dear GAPS families,
As we settle into the school year, the district will be focusing on a foundational building block for our students’ success: regular attendance. We have some catching up to do academically, and having students regularly attend school is critical to closing the learning gap. By having your child in school each day, we can continue to make progress toward academic success.
Research shows missing just two days of school each month – whether excused or unexcused absences – can have a significant impact on students’ ability to master subjects such as math and reading at the same level as their classmates. Learning is a progressive activity which builds on what teachers have discussed the previous day. Despite our best efforts during the pandemic, we found at-home reading and learning is not as effective in comparison to in-person classwork. We need your child at school every day.
As a district, we will be celebrating attendance in our schools with positive reinforcement and recognition. This year, you will also see reminder messages regarding the importance of attending school on social media, ParentSquare, and from your school. Some things you can do at home to help support your child:
Establish bedtime and morning routines, including setting an alarm clock in the morning.
Have your child eat a healthy breakfast so they come to school prepared to learn.
If possible, schedule medical and dental appointments outside of school hours.
Reinforce the importance of showing up to school every day. Attendance is an important life skill, which will help them later in life when they enter the workforce.
Our teachers, staff, and administrators are dedicated to your student’s continued success and growth. However, as parents and guardians, you hold the most influence with your children, and we seek your support to encourage student attendance this year. Thank you for all you do to support your child’s academic success and well-being.
Sincerely,
Superintendent Andy Gardner Greater Albany Public Schools
Atentamente,
Superintendente Andy Gardner Escuelas Públicas de Greater Albany
Recruitment events scheduled to increase school district’s support staff
Greater Albany Public Schools will host recruitment events next week to give potential applicants an opportunity to explore open positions in the school district. A bilingual staff recruitment event will be held online beginning at 6 p.m. on Oct. 11, and tours of Memorial Middle School and Oak Elementary are slated for 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively, on Thursday, Oct. 13.
“Substitute employees are critical for us. A substitute working just one or two days a week can have a significant impact on our students’ education,” said Andy Gardner, GAPS Superintendent. “Expanding our substitute employees will improve our schools’ operations, and create the stability students need in order to be able to learn. We hope these events are successful and welcome all who are interested in working for the district to apply.”
Bilingual staff recruitment
The bilingual staff recruitment event will be held on Zoom (meeting ID: 898 6394 9022, passcode: 419877) from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Members of GAPS Human Resources, the Department of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and the Welcome Center will be available to answer questions regarding the application process and about the district’s open positions.
“It is so important that the district’s workforce reflects every student in our classrooms and in our schools. Being proactive in diversifying the GAPS workforce benefits everyone,” said Javier Cervantes, GAPS Executive Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. “It is crucial, and that is why we are trying to be creative and intentional in our outreach so we may reach as many people as possible. Hosting a bilingual recruitment event on Oct. 11 is one way to achieve that goal.”
The district currently has more than seven positions open for bilingual assistants, as well as several other positions where bilingual language employees are preferred. To view the open positions, visit https://albany.k12.or.us/about/jobs.
Recruitment for substitute positions
Another opportunity for applicants to learn more about the district’s job openings is to attend one of two in-person recruitment events next week. The district will host an open house on Thursday, Oct. 13 to recruit substitute teachers and classified positions. The first half of the open house will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at Memorial Middle School, and the second half will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Oak Elementary School.
“We are really excited about growing the district’s substitute employee pool. These positions are terrific for applicants who want work schedule flexibility, but also want to help us inspire students,” said Heather Huzefka, GAPS Executive Director of Human Resources.
After checking in at the GAPS tent outside of the school, applicants will be provided with a guided tour of the school, where they may learn more about substitute classified positions across the district. These positions include: bilingual assistants, bus attendants, clerical assistants, custodians, library assistants, and many more. The district is also hiring for substitute teachers. Those who attend the in-person events and fill out a job application onsite will be entered into a drawing for a Visa gift card.
Grant addresses inequities, systemic challenges among Latino/a/x and indigenous students
This summer, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) announced Greater Albany Public Schools (GAPS) was one of 28 recipients of the Latino/a/x and Indigenous – Student Success Grant. In total, the district was awarded $204,311.
“We are really excited about this grant and its support of our Latino and indigenous students,” said GAPS Superintendent Andy Gardner. “This will enable us to create stronger connections with our students and lead to greater success in schools.”
GAPS was the only school district in ODE’s region 2 to receive the grant. Region 2 includes Benton, Clatsop, Columbia, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Polk, Tillamook and Yamhill Counties. The grant was completed by the GAPS Curriculum and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) departments, with Javier Cervantes, GAPS Executive Director of EDI, taking the lead.
“I believe this grant recognizes the rapid growth of the Latino population in our student body,” Cervantes said. “It is an instrument which will allow us to better serve our district’s fastest growing community and help families see their students to success.” Twenty-three percent of GAPS students identify as Latino.
The district intends to use the funding to hire ombudspersons to further support students’ academic progress. The ombudspersons will also serve as a resource for students, staff, and families who experience challenges in adapting to social climate issues in schools.
The grant is part of the state’s Latino/a/x and Indigenous Student Success Plan, which seeks to address historic and current systemic inequities experienced by Latino/a/x and Indigenous students through focused investments and partnerships with community based organizations, school districts, early learning providers, and higher education.
