Mark Hannan will be joining us as the new principal for Albany Options School! Mark brings over 31 years of experience in education into his new role with GAPS. 

“I am extremely excited for this new adventure” Hannan said. “My alternative ed teaching early in my career had a profound impact on me as it led me into counseling and later into administration. This position combines my skill set with my passion, which is awesome!”

Mark has worked in the Silver Falls School District since 2001, most recently serving as District Administrator of Special Programs as well as principal at Silver Crest Elementary since 2016. In that role, he was the district administrator in charge of migrant, homeless, foster, ELD, nursing, mentor program, and counseling and was the administrator in charge of 146 student K-8 rural elementary school students.

Before that, Hannan was principal of Silverton High School for seven years, overseeing new high school design and construction while leading a 1,300 member student body and three-person administrative team. Hannan was the curriculum assistant principal and assistant principal in charge of the 9th grade campus of Silverton High School from 2001 until assuming the principal role in 2009.

Hannan began his professional career with the Silver Falls School District, working at Victor Point Elementary from 1989-94 and as an alternative education teacher at Silverton High School from 1994-97. He left the district to work at Faulconer Grade School in Sheridan and Santiam High School in Mill City before returning to Silver Falls in 2001.

“My counseling skills have served me well throughout my administrative career, especially when working with students that struggle in the mainstream systems.” Hannan said. “I’ve found that building meaningful relationships with students is the key to encouraging their very best efforts.”

Hannan has worked on several committees and has been heavily involved in the community throughout his career, including serving as an OSAA Board Member for two terms (President, 2017-18) and as Mid-Willamette Education Consortium Vice-Chair.

Hannan is a two-time graduate of Oregon State, earning his bachelor’s degree in Integrated Science Education in 1988 and a master’s degree in Counseling in 2001. He also completed the L2000+ Licensure Program at Portland State in 2001 (Initial Administrator License) and 2007 (Continuing Administrator/Initial Superintendent License). 

Additionally, the district announced that Kerri Tatum, who recently joined GAPS as Director of Innovation and Learning Technologies, will be assuming the role of Secondary Education Director. Tatum, who joined GAPS after serving as principal at Siuslaw High School for six years, replaces Jeff Brew, who recently retired from the district after 34 years of service.

This afternoon, Governor Brown, the Oregon Health Authority, and the Oregon Department of Education announced new Community COVID-19 Metrics that must be met for Oregon schools to hold any form of in-person instruction. For students to return to school under Greater Albany Public School’s Primary (K-2) Student Model or 3-12 In-Person Rotation Model, certain conditions must be met by the state and both Linn and Benton Counties. 

Please note that NO decisions have yet been made for GAPS.

For a school district that draws substantial numbers of students or staff from multiple counties, such as ours, the case rate and test positivity rate should be considered in each of those counties. Schools must be in a county that is no longer in baseline phase to consider in-person instructional models. According to data shared with superintendents’ today by ODE, our area reflects the following:

County Metrics – metrics to be met three weeks in a row: 

• Case rate: ≤10 cases per 100,000 population in the preceding 7 days
  • Benton County has met this metric for one week
  • Linn County has not met this for any of the last three weeks
• Test positivity: ≤5% in the preceding 7 days
  • Benton County has met this metric
  • Linn County has met this metric

Neither Linn nor Benton counties have met both of these metrics for three weeks in a row.

 – and – 

State Metric – metric to be met three weeks in a row 

• Test positivity: ≤5% in the preceding 7 days   

The State of Oregon has not met this metric any of the last three weeks.

Districts who meet one of the County Metrics for three weeks in a row may apply for an Exception for students in grades K-3 and for other small groups of students in order for them to attend school in person.  

In the next few days, GAPS leadership will be examining our data and the options available to us.  Part of our considerations will include the Exception options, as well.  On Monday, August 3rd at 7 p.m., the GAPS Board will be presented with the staff recommendation for students in our schools.

Greater Albany Public Schools announces the following administrative changes and assignments for the 2020-21 school year. These changes are in addition to the previous administrative assignments announced on May 1. 

South Albany High School

• Kelly Bussard, principal at Oak Elementary for the last eight years, will be the new assistant principal at South Albany High School working with new principal John Hunter. 
• Assistant Principal Richard Shaw will be assigned to another position within the district. 

Clover Ridge/Meadow Ridge Elementary

• Elisa Stephens, principal for the former Clover Ridge Elementary, will be the new Lafayette Elementary principal.
• Christy Gill will be principal at the new Meadow Ridge Elementary. Ms. Gill has worked in K-12 education for more than 29 years – all in the state of Oregon – most recently serving as the assistant principal at Prairie Mountain School in the Bethel School District since 2018. She worked in the Bethel School District since 2013, previously as the district’s Administrator for Student Achievement and as a Literacy Teacher on Special Assignment. Before moving into administrative roles, Ms. Gill was an elementary reading specialist and began her career as a teacher. Ms. Gill holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oregon and also completed an Initial Administrator Licensure program at the university in 2017.
• Sue Turner will be the assistant principal at the new Meadow Ridge Elementary. Ms. Turner has been with Greater Albany Public Schools since 2015, serving as a kindergarten teacher at Oak Elementary. Prior to coming to Albany, she was a teacher in the North Clackamas School District for 17 years. Ms. Turner has degrees from Azusa Pacific (bachelor’s) and Lesley University (master’s), a teaching certificate from Point Loma Nazarene University, and earned an Initial Administrator licence from George Fox University in 2014. 

Oak Elementary

• Kelly Bussard, principal at Oak Elementary for the last eight years, will be the new assistant principal at South Albany High School.
• Shanda Brown will be the new principal at Oak Elementary. Ms. Brown has worked in the Salem-Keizer School District nonconsecutively since 2004, holding positions as an elementary literacy teacher, an ESOL teacher, an instructional coach, and most recently as a Title IA program assistant since 2016. She took a break from Salem-Keizer to work for the Oregon Department of Education from 2012 to 2016 as an education specialist focusing on school improvement for priority and focus schools. Ms. Brown earned degrees from Western Oregon University (bachelor’s) and Willamette University (master’s) and completed the Leadership 2000+ program at Portland State.

Lafayette Elementary

• Principal Jodi Smith left the district to pursue a new opportunity in Arizona. 
• Elisa Stephens, principal for the former Clover Ridge Elementary, will be the new Lafayette Elementary principal.

The search for the next Albany Options School principal is ongoing.

Greater Albany Public Schools is implementing a 1:1 technological model of instruction for this coming school year (2020-2021). Individual devices will be provided for each student to use throughout the year. Distribution plans will be announced at a later date.

IF you would prefer to purchase a device instead of using the District provided ChromeTab (Grades K-1) or Chromebook (Grades 2-12) OR are wondering if a device you currently own will be usable, please ensure they meet the following requirements (please keep in mind the notes at the end):

Supported Operating Systems/Devices

• Chromebook or ChromeTab v83.x
• Laptop/Desktop Computers:
  • PC: Windows 10 or newer
  • MAC: OSX v10.13.6 or higher

Hardware Requirements

We strongly recommend a device that is less than 5 years old.

• Processor: Minimum 1 GHz. Recommended 2GHz or more
• Wireless adapter (Wi-Fi) or other means to connect to the internet
• Memory (RAM): Minimum 4GB. Recommended 8GB or more
• Speakers or headphones, Camera, and Microphone

ChromeTabs

ChromeTabs will only be used for Kinder and 1st grade.  If you would like to purchase a ChromeTab, the District is purchasing the Lenovo Mediatek ChromeTab for this school year (2020-2021).  Please keep in mind that ChromeTabs are not used in school after 1st grade. We do not suggest purchasing one unless you have more than one child that will be entering Kindergarten/1st grade. Android and IOS tablets (iPads, Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tablets, etc) will NOT work.

Chromebooks

If you want a standard Chromebook make sure it meets the minimum requirements listed above.  The district is purchasing this Lenovo MediaTek Chromebook for this school year (2020-2021) but many other options are available.  

2-in-1 Device

If you would like to purchase a tablet-like device that will also be able to be used in 2nd grade and beyond, there are many 2-in-1 convertible Chromebooks available.  We recommend the Acer Convertible Chromebook.  For a more ruggedized option there is this Sturdy Acer Convertible Chromebook. The important factor when looking for a 2-in-1 device is that it has a touchscreen and can flip around to a tablet style.

Expirations

The automatic update cycle for a new Chromebook lasts 8 years from the time the device is first available for sale, not from the purchased date.  You can find the expiration date for any device you are considering purchasing here: Auto Update policy – Google Chrome Enterprise Help.  

Protection

For all devices we also suggest purchasing a hard case that fits your device to help protect your investment in the event of a drop.

Internet Access

Does your student have access to the internet at home?

There are several ways for students to access free or low cost internet:

• WiFi networks at all GAPS school sites now cover the entirety of all building parking lots. Please remain in your vehicles if possible and maintain social distancing while using school WiFi in building parking lots.
• All Comcast Xfinity WiFi hotspots are currently available for free for all users (including non-members) and may be available in your neighborhood. Check WiFi networks for the open “xfinitywifi” network on your computer or device. You can also find hotspots by clicking hotspots.wifi.xfinity.com.
• Families without a home internet connection can visit Comcast’s internetessentials.com, which has coverage over most of the Mid-Willamette Valley. They are offering 60 days of free internet for new customers and offer low cost options for families that qualify.  
• A limited number of hotspots will be available for families that can not connect in any of the above methods (see below to contact us).

Acceso a Internet

¿Tiene su estudiante acceso a Internet en casa?

Hay varias formas para que los estudiantes accedan a Internet gratis o con servicios a bajo costo:

• Las redes WiFi en todos los edificios escolares de GAPS, ahora cubren la totalidad de los estacionamientos de todos los edificios. Si es posible, permanezca en sus vehículos y mantenga el distanciamiento social mientras usa el WiFi de la escuela en los estacionamientos de los edificios.
• Todos los puntos de acceso al Internet (hotspots) de Comcast Xfinity WiFi están actualmente disponibles de forma gratuita para todos los usuarios (incluidos los no miembros) y pueden estar disponibles en su vecindario. Verifique las redes WiFi para la red “xfinitywifi” abierta en su computadora o dispositivo. También puede encontrar “hotspots” haciendo clic en hotspots.wifi.xfinity.com.
• Las familias que no tienen una conexión a Internet en el hogar pueden visitar internetessentials.com de Comcast, que tiene cobertura en la mayor parte del Valle de -Willamette. Están ofreciendo 60 días de Internet gratis, para nuevos clientes y ofrecen opciones de bajo costo para las familias que califican.
• Habrá un número limitado de puntos de acceso, disponibles para familias que no puedan conectarse en ninguno de los métodos anteriores (consulte a continuación para comunicarse con nosotros).
