Albany Police and Fire Department will be supporting school back in session by doing traffic suppression on the first day of school at all secondary schools. This is to ensure drivers re-familiarize themselves with the 20 MPH school safety speed zone.

The Institute of Transportation defines traffic calming as “the combination of measures that reduce negative effects of motor vehicle use, alter driver behavior, and improve conditions for non-motorized street users”. Officers and firefighters will monitor school community traffic in the safety speed zones.

Officers and firefighters will be in uniform but will not actively approach students. Students and staff are welcome to approach an officer or firefighter and have a conversation, but the prime responsibility of the Police and Fire Department at this event is traffic calming. 

“We very much value our partnership with the Albany Police and Fire Department,” Interim Rob Saxton said. “We appreciate their efforts to ensure our drivers are responsible and our students are safe on the first days of school.”

Los departamentos de policía y bomberos de Albany apoyarán el regreso a clases mediante la supresión del tráfico el primer día de clases en todas las escuelas secundarias. Esto es para asegurar que los conductores se familiaricen con la zona de velocidad de seguridad escolar de 20 MPH (millas por hora).

Interim Superintendent Rob Saxton has followed his family line of educators and dedicated his career to education. His first teaching experience was here at GAPS as a math teacher and coach at West Albany High School. He then moved over to South Albany High School where he taught and served as the head football coach. His 10-year GAPS career culminated with an assistant principal position at West Albany High School.

Following his career with GAPS, Saxton became a superintendent for Sherwood School District for 5 years, and superintendent for Tigard-Tualatin School District for another 7 years. 

Continuing in education leadership, Saxton moved up to the Chief of Oregon Schools position where he led the Oregon Department of Education from preK-12 for 3 years, and soon landed the Superintendent of Northwest Regional Education Service District (NWRESD) position. Saxton led student outcome improvements for 163,000 students, worked with 20 school districts and Oregon Legislature, and implemented the first Equity and Inclusion Department during his time with NWRESD.

Besides his professional career, Saxton has gained skills in other areas including fly fishing, home remodeling, and exercise. Here are a few fun facts about our new Interim Superintendent:

• His favorite sweet snack is Mud Pie 
• He loves reading to his grandchildren
• He flipped a whole house last year
• He has been retired for two years
• He ran in the Boston Marathon three times
• His camera roll is full of fishing photos and his grandkids
• He has never had a Facebook page
• His favorite book is “The Hobbit”

Please welcome Rob Saxton as our Interim Superintendent. He has agreed to 190 days of service, and his position will terminate on June 30, 2022.

El Superintendente interino Rob Saxton ha seguido la línea familiar de educadores y ha dedicado su carrera a la educación. Su primera experiencia docente fue aquí en el Distrito escolar de Greater Albany (GAPS por sus siglas en inglés), como maestro de matemáticas y entrenador en la preparatoria West Albany High School antes de cambiarse a la preparatoria South Albany High School, donde enseñó y se desempeñó como entrenador en jefe de fútbol americano. Su carrera de 10 años en GAPS culminó con un puesto de Subdirector en West Albany High School.

Después de su carrera en GAPS, Saxton se convirtió en el Superintendente del Distrito Escolar de Sherwood, durante 5 años y Superintendente del Distrito Escolar de Tigard-Tualatin durante otros 7 años.

Both The Welcome Center and the FACT office are moving from Albany Options School to Lafayette Elementary School. The move-in date for The Welcome Center is TBD, but the FACT office will move on August 23. FACT will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, August 23-24, to allow time to unpack and adjust to the new space. Regular hours and office phone numbers will remain the same after the move for both FACT and The Welcome Center.

Beginning Friday, August 13, masks are required in all indoor public settings per the governor’s order. Anyone age 5 and older attending in-person education, activities, or athletics at GAPS schools will be required to wear a mask while indoors. This includes in-person registration.

This decision is in response to the significant increase of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Oregon and the emergence of the highly transmissible Delta variant of COVID-19. This mandate will evolve as the situation dictates. Please see Governor Kate Brown’s Press Release for further information.

The Regular School Board meeting has been rescheduled to 5-7pm on August 11th at South Albany High School Commons. This meeting will be open to the public per request of the board. To create a respectful environment for all, we ask that the public does not use disruptive behavior such as booing, clapping, or shouting. To protect the safety of the Board, district staff, and community, signs are not allowed in the public meeting area. The agenda and board packet are available on our website.

There is an Executive Session at 4:30pm per ORS 192.660, (2)(d) To conduct deliberations with persons designated by the governing body to carry on labor negotiations. Executive Sessions are not open to the public and information is confidential.

Written public comments for each meeting will be entered into record and approved by the Board. Public Comments will be read independently by the Board prior to the meeting but will not be read during the meeting. Click here for complete details on How to Submit a Public Comment.
